Speech Service Information

The Gordon County School System offers Speech/Language Services to children living within the Gordon County School District beginning at age three. Children are required to meet the Georgia state eligibility guidelines and follow the Response to Intervention process for services. The four areas of communication are articulation, language, voice, and fluency.

Response to Intervention Tiers

Tier 1- Speech/Language Pathologists (SLPs) conduct Universal Articulation Screening on all students in PreKindergarten through 3rd Grade. Classroom teachers attempt to correct identified speech errors. If the child does not make adequate progress, transition is made to Tier 2.

Tier 2- The SLP and classroom teacher develop an RTI Tier 2 Plan. Interventions provided at Tier 2 depending upon severity are:

            ~Peer-assistance (Drill with word list)

~Classroom teacher assistance (Drill with word list)

~Speedy Speech (SLP or Speech Paraprofessional pull student to the hall to drill words.)

Parent is notified by classroom teacher. If the child does not make adequate progress, transition is made to Tier 3.

Tier 3 (SST)- The parent is invited to join the classroom teacher, SLP, and Student Support Team (SST) Chairperson to review progress in Tier 2 and to develop an SST Plan for further interventions. If the child does not make adequate progress, transition is made to Tier 4, which involves a complete Speech/Language Evaluation to determine eligibility for the Speech-Impaired Program.
